Geographic thought, field research, and regional studies
Master's programme in Geography covering physical geography, human geography, geographic information systems, and regional studies — with fieldwork grounded in the Ganga floodplain and Varanasi region.
The Master of Arts in Geography at BITE is a field-intensive, two-year programme that combines classical geographical thought with modern spatial-analysis skills (GIS, remote sensing) and regional studies rooted in the Ganga basin and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, the curriculum covers physical geography (geomorphology, climatology, biogeography), human geography (population, economic, urban, rural), advanced cartography, remote sensing (ArcGIS, QGIS), and regional planning frameworks. Varanasi and its surroundings provide an unmatched living laboratory: the Ganga floodplain for hydrological and environmental studies, the Vindhyan ranges for geomorphology, urban Varanasi for settlement geography and heritage planning, and rural Babatpur for agricultural and demographic field studies. Students spend multiple semesters doing field excursions, producing hand-drawn and GIS-assisted regional maps, and eventually compiling a regional monograph as part of the final-year dissertation. The programme is mapped to the UGC-NET Geography Paper II syllabus; faculty run NET workshops, topic-wise coaching, and past-paper analysis sessions. 30 sanctioned seats per year, merit-based admission on graduation aggregate with UP government reserved-category quotas. MA Geography graduates progress to Ph.D. research, UGC-NET/JRF-qualified Assistant Professor roles, government surveyor and cartography positions, urban-planning consultancy, GIS-analyst jobs in private firms and infrastructure consultancies, teaching (PGT after B.Ed), and specialised careers in disaster management and environmental consulting.
