Prof. Rai served as Head & Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Chief Proctor at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) from 1977 to 2020. He held the prestigious position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), Gaya (2016–2019), where he also served as Administrator & CEO of the Gaya Campus.

He held distinguished positions at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan — as Professor (25 years), Principal (Dean), Registrar, and Finance Officer. A former Scientist/Engineer at NRSC/ISRO and BARC Research Fellow.
