Science of Everyday Life — human development from infancy to ageing
Admission 2026-27 details — fees, deadline, eligibility, scholarshipsMaster's programme in Home Science specialising in Human Development — covering child development, adolescent psychology, family studies, and community-based research.
The Master of Arts in Home Science with a Human Development specialisation is a two-year applied programme for students passionate about the life-cycle science of human development — from infancy and early childhood through adolescence, adulthood, and gerontology. Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, the curriculum blends psychology, sociology, and Home Science foundations: child psychology, adolescent development, family studies and dynamics, parenting research, early-childhood education, developmental disabilities, and community wellbeing. BITE's Home Science department runs a dedicated child-development lab with observation facilities, and students spend significant time on fieldwork in local anganwadi centres, primary schools, special-education institutions, and rural outreach programmes in the Babatpur belt. The programme targets three professional outcomes: research (Ph.D. preparation, NET/JRF pathway), applied practice (counselling, ICDS programme officer, NGO programme coordinator), and teaching (after B.Ed, PGT Home Science or Psychology). Students complete a substantive dissertation in semester four — typically an empirical field study on a theme like malnutrition in Babatpur pre-schoolers, adolescent mental health in rural schools, or early-marriage impact on educational attainment. 30 sanctioned seats per year, open to BA/B.Sc. graduates with Home Science, Psychology, Child Development, or closely related disciplines (50% aggregate minimum). Career pathways include counselling and child-psychology roles, NGO programme-officer positions (UNICEF affiliates, Pratham, Save the Children), anganwadi supervisor and ICDS programme-officer posts, pre-primary and special-education teaching, research-assistantships in ICSSR or ICMR projects, university teaching via UGC-NET/JRF, and Ph.D. research at BHU's Home Science faculty or equivalent programmes nationally.
