This is IGNOU's official admission portal — the same Samarth eGov platform used by MGKVP, VBSPU, BHU, DU, JNU. Do not apply via third-party agents or aggregator websites.
Create an account with a working mobile number and email. You will receive OTPs at both — verify them. The same mobile + email must be used throughout the admission cycle.
Browse the programme list. Filter by school (School of Sciences, School of Humanities, School of Education, etc.) or by level (UG / PG / Diploma / Certificate). Each programme shows eligibility, fee, duration, and intake-cycle.
Standard checklist: passport photo (<200 KB JPG), signature (<100 KB JPG), 10th + 12th marksheets (PDF, <2 MB each), UG marksheet/degree for PG, ID proof (Aadhaar PDF), category certificate if claiming reservation. IGNOU programme-specific documents (B.Ed, Ph.D) may have additional requirements — refer to programme notification.
IGNOU programme fees are paid online via the Samarth gateway (cards, net banking, UPI). Fees vary widely: certificate programmes from ₹2,000; BA/BCom around ₹4,000-6,000/year; PG ₹7,000-15,000/year; professional programmes (B.Ed, MBA) higher. The portal shows the exact fee at the payment step.
IGNOU operates 67 regional centres + 3,000+ study centres across India. Pick the regional centre nearest to you (Lucknow is the regional centre for most of UP including Varanasi). Your study material delivery, counselling sessions, and term-end exams are administered through these centres.

IGNOU uses CUET (PG) for select programmes: B.Ed, M.Ed (some specialisations), and Ph.D programmes. For most other programmes (BA, BCom, BSc, BCA, MA, MCom, MSc, MBA Open Distance, PG Diplomas, Certificate programmes), admission is open — no entrance exam, eligibility-based admission via Samarth. Each programme notification specifies the required entrance.
IGNOU runs two admission cycles per year: January cycle (applications typically Sept-Dec) and July cycle (applications typically Mar-Jun). The Samarth portal stays open with rolling applications for most programmes. CUET-required programmes (B.Ed, Ph.D) have fixed annual cycles aligned with the CUET-PG calendar.
For Varanasi and most of Eastern UP, the IGNOU Regional Centre is in Lucknow. Study centres for Varanasi students are spread across the city — find the nearest one via the "Locate Study Centre" tool on ignou.ac.in. Counselling sessions (in-person tutor support) and term-end examination centres are coordinated through these regional + study centres.
No. IGNOU B.Ed is an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programme — it is not the same as regular-mode B.Ed offered at colleges like BITE. The two have different fee structures, course delivery models (ODL vs classroom), internship requirements, and recognition for some govt jobs. For regular-mode classroom B.Ed (the format most TGT-PE/PGT-PE recruiters prefer), apply at an NCTE-recognised regular B.Ed college via the UP B.Ed JEE route — BITE (MGKVP-affiliated) is one such option.

The dashboard shows: application status (Submitted / Under Review / Confirmed / Rejected), payment status, enrolment number (issued after confirmation), regional centre, and study centre allocation. IGNOU also emails the confirmation letter once the application is processed (typically 2-4 weeks).
IGNOU is the national open-and-distance-learning university — programmes are delivered via self-study material + occasional counselling sessions, with term-end exams once or twice a year. Regular-mode universities (like MGKVP, VBSPU, BHU) require daily classroom attendance, continuous semester evaluations, and on-campus practical work. Both award UGC-recognised degrees with equivalent legal value, but: (1) IGNOU is more flexible for working professionals; (2) regular-mode is preferred by employers requiring full-time classroom education (e.g., govt school PE teacher recruitment); (3) regular-mode programmes offer hostel, campus life, peer learning that IGNOU does not.

Yes. IGNOU is a Central University established by an Act of Parliament (1985). Its UG and PG degrees are recognised by UGC, AICTE (where applicable), and the Distance Education Bureau. They are accepted for most government job recruitment and PSC examinations. EXCEPTION: some specific recruitment streams (notably school teaching at certain levels and some defence-services PTI roles) prefer or require regular-mode classroom degrees over ODL. Check the specific recruitment notification before relying solely on an IGNOU degree.
